{"id":1445,"date":"2025-06-23T09:25:40","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T09:25:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/profitalarm.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/23\/trumps-iran-strike-is-a-huge-win-for-netanyahu-but-the-endgame-is-as-unclear-as-ever\/"},"modified":"2025-06-23T09:25:40","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T09:25:40","slug":"trumps-iran-strike-is-a-huge-win-for-netanyahu-but-the-endgame-is-as-unclear-as-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profitalarm.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/23\/trumps-iran-strike-is-a-huge-win-for-netanyahu-but-the-endgame-is-as-unclear-as-ever\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s Iran strike is a huge win for Netanyahu but the endgame is as unclear as ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7u8xt500gf26p75g88aznj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The smile on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s face was impossible to hide.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000a3b6mfd6v1zvp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Minutes after President Donald Trump announced that the US had bombed three of Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities, Netanyahu effusively praised the American leader as someone whose decisions could lead the region to a \u201cfuture of prosperity and peace.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000b3b6m3zhiisnw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Since Israel launched its attacks on Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities and other targets, Netanyahu and the country\u2019s other political echelon had been careful not to be perceived as dragging Trump into another war in the Middle East. In the end, the US joining the campaign \u2013 and taking credit for the results \u2013 is arguably an even bigger success for Netanyahu, who brought the world\u2019s superpower into what had been Israel\u2019s mission.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000c3b6m6kf78wvl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Netanyahu has talked about the threat of Iran for much of his political career, parading out visual aids on occasion \u2013 like a cartoon of a bomb at the UN General Assembly in 2012 \u2013 to help his audience. But the longstanding criticism was that Netanyahu\u2019s rhetoric was all bark, no bite.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000d3b6mi1w9lul6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For all the talk of the threat Iran posed to Israel and the wider region, Netanyahu never pulled the trigger on a major military operation. Instead, he authorized sporadic high-risk, high-reward operations from Israel\u2019s Mossad spy agency, including the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists and the stealing of the country\u2019s nuclear archive.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000e3b6m1ui80crm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But Iran\u2019s nuclear program survived largely unscathed, and Netanyahu was left for years with no measurable achievement against an issue he came to see as an existential threat to Israel.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000f3b6mxqnz4wjd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The last 10 days rewrote the script.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000g3b6mvvon6w2n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Aviv Bushinsky, who worked with Netanyahu during his first term in the late-90s, called the attacks on Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities \u201cno doubt his greatest accomplishment.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000h3b6m7737ortk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Israel\u2019s initial waves of attacks and its establishment of air superiority over Iran began a clear string of military successes, which the Trump administration ultimately joined.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000j3b6mq412ycx1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The scale of the success is so great that Bushinsky argued it made Netanyahu\u2019s one of the country\u2019s top two or three leaders since the country\u2019s founding in 1948. The \u201cstain\u201d of failing to stop the Hamas-led attack on October 7 remains with Netanyahu, Bushinsky said, but the attack on Iran has immediately become part of his legacy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000k3b6m3lwoip0y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cNetanyahu has a signature of taking down the nuclear capabilities of the Iranians,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000l3b6moa1f5l8z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Now Netanyahu immediately faces another challenge: deciding what to do next. At least publicly, the US has made it clear that it sees the Iran strikes as finished as long as Iranian forces don\u2019t attack US troops in the region.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000m3b6mqy9f7j7s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But after starting the campaign alone, Israel is still pressing its advantage. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin said Sunday that Israel was preparing for the \u201ccampaign to prolong.\u201d Before the weekend, Israel had conducted the military campaign against Iran on its own, and it has since carried out more strikes after the US bombing of the nuclear facilities.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000n3b6mnkvzmiy1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIf the war was designed to obliterate Iran\u2019s nuclear infrastructure, and the president of the United States says they destroyed the three facilities, then why isn\u2019t Israel announcing mission accomplished?\u201d former Israeli consul general Alon Pinkas asked rhetorically. \u201cThis military solution for everything is fine, as long as you understand that it is aligned with political goals. And I don\u2019t see them.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000o3b6m2heuugxw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Since the start of the Trump administration, the friction between Trump and Netanyahu has been on full display as the White House pursued a series of steps in the region that left Israel sidelined. Trump\u2019s first trip to the Middle East blew right past Israel without stopping, the American president signed a ceasefire deal with the Houthis in Yemen that cut out Israel, and he surprised Netanyahu in April by announcing nuclear negotiations with Iran.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000p3b6mo5vhmfqf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US decisions raised questions about whether Netanyahu was able to handle a second Trump administration, especially one with a far more vocal isolationist wing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000q3b6mn5zxzrki@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            All of those questions disappeared in a puff of bunker buster smoke in the aftermath of the US strikes as the two leaders heaped praise on one another    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image-slider\/instances\/cmc7uhphg00033b6mtn40tlo4@published\" class=\"image-slider\" data-horizontal=\"true\">\n<div class=\"image-slider__container image-slider__horizontal\">\n<div class=\"image-slider__image-container\">\n<div data-editable=\"beforeImage\" class=\"image-slider__image-before\"><\/div>\n<div data-editable=\"afterImage\" class=\"image-slider__image-after\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"image-slider__handle\">                    <span class=\"image-slider__left-arrow\"><\/span>                    <span class=\"image-slider__right-arrow\"><\/span>            <\/div>\n<div class=\"image-slider__overlay image-slider__isafter\">\n<div class=\"image-slider__before-label\" data-before-text=\"June 20\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"image-slider__after-label\" data-after-text=\"June 22\"><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"image-slider__caption\">            <span class=\"image-slider__title\">This satellite image provided by Maxar Technologies shows the Fordow enrichment facility in Iran before and after US strikes. Editors\u2019 note: Satellite photo above was rotated by Maxar Technologies, the source of the image, to show the original orientation of the moment the image was taken.<\/span>            <span class=\"image-slider__credit\">Maxar Technologies<\/span>        <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000r3b6mqf9i0l73@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The issue of Iran had broad consensus among much of Israeli society, with a majority of the country viewing a nuclear Iran as an existential threat.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000s3b6mqbfbml7u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to a survey from the Israel Democracy Institute done before the US strikes, approximately 70% of Israelis supported the campaign against Iran, while nearly as many believe it was right to launch the strikes without a guarantee of US involvement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000t3b6m3jwec5ib@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That level of support has drawn accolades for Netanyahu even from his detractors.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000u3b6mpc1ia2k5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cYou don\u2019t have to like Netanyahu in order to admit yes, he achieved something,\u201d said Ben-Dror Yemini, a political analyst for Israel\u2019s prominent Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000v3b6mbcjtfhin@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But the current moment \u2013 one in which Israel and the US have carried out punishing strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities \u2013 requires sensitive diplomacy and a willingness to back off the military successes that appear to have come so easily, Yemini said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000x3b6mwmtn5nj2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The decision to act and the decision to wait each involved its own elements of risk, according to former US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000y3b6mdf18avpa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere\u2019s risk in any use of forces and certainly in a major decision like this one from the United States,\u201d Shapiro said. \u201cBut there was risk in not acting and leaving Iran within weeks of a nuclear bomb at the time of their choosing.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt7000z3b6mqq4t84ff@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But having made the critical choice to go after Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities, Shapiro said it would be a grave mistake to assume the conflict is over.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7uakt700113b6mvrih2vw3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Asked if the Middle East was safer now than it was before US involvement in the strikes against Iran, Shapiro said it depends on whether the bombing campaign destroyed or significantly damaged Iranian nuclear facilities.
