All carry inherent risks for the Islamic Republic, Israel and the United States.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7t71j300003b6n3p3oz30b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Here\u2019s what to know:    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmc7smqd8001o3b6klworw80k@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"iran-could-hit-us-military-interests-in-the-region\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Iran could hit US military interests in the region<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7smkfc000c3b6kacnf4pp0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Direct US involvement in the conflict could see Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) activate what remains of its proxies across Iraq, Yemen and Syria, groups which have previously launched attacks on American assets in the region.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7smkfc000d3b6kdjuth0hf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While Iran\u2019s strongest ally in the region was once Lebanon\u2019s Hezbollah, that group has been significantly weakened by Israeli attacks.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7smkfc000e3b6kx925vyvd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) says the US maintains a presence at 19 sites in total across the region, with eight of those considered by analysts to have a permanent US presence. As of June 13, the CFR estimated some 40,000 US troops were in the Middle East.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7smkfc000f3b6k3wigewyr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In Iraq, for example, there were 2,500 US troops as of late last year. An Iranian attack on these forces is not inconceivable. In 2020, an Iranian missile attack on a US garrison left more than 100 soldiers with traumatic brain injuries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7smkfc000h3b6k6v0omxgp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A resurgence of attacks from Yemen against US assets is already on the table. Yemen\u2019s Iran-backed Houthi rebels previously vowed to attack American ships in the Red Sea should the US join Israel\u2019s conflict with Iran. A prominent Houthi official said in a social media post early Sunday that \u201cTrump must bear the consequences\u201d of the US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7smkfc000i3b6k23ib2jmy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It is unclear if this marks the end of a US-Houthi ceasefire struck in May, in which Washington said it would halt its military campaign against the Houthis in exchange for the group stopping its attacks on US interests in the region.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7smkfc000j3b6k7jz9sqf1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Knowing that it can\u2019t outright win a conflict against Israel and the US, experts have said that Tehran could seek to engage in a war of attrition, where it tries to exhaust its adversary\u2019s will or capacity to fight in a drawn-out and damaging conflict, which Trump at the outset of his presidency said he wanted to avoid.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmc7smulm001q3b6kvn36app5@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"iran-could-disrupt-global-oil-trade\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Iran could disrupt global oil trade<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7smkfc000l3b6k1nu1n4xe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Iran also has the power to influence the \u201centire commercial shipping in the Gulf,\u201d Ravid said, should it decide to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc7smkfc000m3b6kh0h68jhj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There have so far been no material disruptions to the global flow of oil.
